CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vents throughout Long Beach, and most replacements run between $450 and $950 installed depending on the linear footage, roof pitch, and whether old vent material needs to come off first. We carry the common CertainTeed profiles on the truck, so a straightforward swap on a single-story home is often done the same day we start. Most Long Beach homeowners discover the problem the way you probably just did: a musty smell in the attic, streaks on the ceiling, or a ridge vent that’s cracked, warped, or peeling away from the shingles after a few seasons of sun and salt air.
The ridge vent is the exhaust side of your roof’s ventilation system. When it fails, hot air and moisture have nowhere to go, and that’s when the real damage starts: baked shingles, soggy insulation, and attic temperatures that hit 140 degrees or more in a Long Beach summer. We see it most often on homes within a mile or two of the coast, where the marine layer keeps things damp and the UV does the rest.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes several ridge vent lines, and they’re not all interchangeable. The main ones we work with in Long Beach are the Mountain Ridge (their mid-range profile with a shingle-over design), the ShingleVent II (a low-profile option that sits flatter against the roofline), and the Filtered Ridge Vent (which adds a built-in filter to keep embers and debris out, something worth considering if you’re in a higher fire-hazard zone). The profile matters because the vent cap has to seat properly against the shingles or water finds a way in.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: if your home was built with standard 3-tab shingles, the vent channel is narrow, and a Mountain Ridge vent can crowd the ridge line. If you have architectural or designer shingles, you need the wider profile or the shingle-over coverage will look wrong and may not seal. We always match the vent to what’s actually on your roof, not what the original builder may have specified. If the old vent is still partially intact, look for an embossed product code on the underside of the cap. If it’s not legible, we measure the vent channel width and the shingle exposure before we quote anything. That’s not something you can guess by looking at a photo.
On the OEM vs. aftermarket question: for CertainTeed roofs, we use genuine CertainTeed vent material whenever we can. The profile geometry and the UV stabilizers in the plastic are specific to the product line, and a generic universal vent often leaves a visible step where it meets the CertainTeed shingles. Birchbark Roofing Long Beach is an independent roofing contractor and not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we stock their vent profiles because they fit their shingles correctly. If a client prefers an aftermarket equivalent with the same measurements, we’ll quote it, but we’ll tell you honestly when it won’t look right.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Warped or wavy vent cap. CertainTeed ridge vents are made from a UV-stabilized polymer, but years of direct Long Beach sun will eventually cause the cap to curl at the edges. When the cap lifts away from the shingles, wind-driven rain gets underneath and the vent stops doing its job.
- Cracked or brittle plastic. Once the vent material starts to chalk and crack, usually after 12 to 18 years in our coastal climate, water intrusion isn’t far behind. You’ll see hairline cracks first, often near the nail line where stress concentrates.
- Granule buildup or staining inside the attic. If you see dark streaks on the underside of the roof deck near the ridge, moisture has been getting past the vent. This is the symptom that most often brings us out for an inspection.
- Hot attic in summer, damp attic in winter. A functioning ridge vent moves a surprising amount of air. When it fails, the attic becomes a heat trap in August and a condensation problem when the marine layer settles in.
- Nails backing out or missing. Ridge vents get nailed through the cap into the ridge board. Thermal expansion and contraction over a decade or more will work those nails loose, and once they back out, the cap can lift in the wind.
None of these are subtle if you know what you’re looking at. Half the inspections we do in neighborhoods like Bixby Knolls, California Heights, and Belmont Heights start with a homeowner who just wanted a leak checked and didn’t realize the ridge vent was the actual problem.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Long Beach home with 20 to 40 linear feet of ridge line, you’re looking at $450 to $950 installed. The range depends on three things: how much vent material needs to come off, whether the roof deck or ridge board needs repair once we expose it, and how difficult the access is on a steep or multi-story roofline.
Here’s the breakdown of what that price includes when we do the work:
- Genuine CertainTeed vent material matched to your existing profile
- Removal and disposal of the failed vent
- Replacement of any rusted or backed-out fasteners
- Inspection and repair of the ridge board and decking if exposed
- Re-seating the shingle overlap so the new vent seals cleanly
- Cleanup, including a photo of the finished roof before we leave
You’ll see your exact price in writing before anyone climbs a ladder. That’s how we operate at Birchbark Roofing. No allowances, no “we’ll figure it out as we go.” If the ridge board turns out to be rotted once we open things up, we’ll show you a photo and tell you the additional cost before we proceed, not after the fact. The replacement itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the vent isn’t seated right or leaks in the first year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things worth checking from the ground or a ladder, and then there’s the actual vent replacement. Checking is fair game: look at the ridge line with binoculars, note whether the cap is lifting or cracked, and if you’re comfortable on a ladder, run your hand along the vent to feel for loose nails. If the vent is just dirty and the cap is still flat and intact, leave it alone. It’s working.
The replacement itself is a different story. Ridge vent installation means working at the highest point of your roof, straddling the ridge while handling tools and nail guns, and getting the shingle overlap right so water sheds correctly. A badly installed vent leaks into the attic, and by the time you see the stains on your ceiling, you’re dealing with a bigger job than the vent swap would have been. CertainTeed’s warranty is only as good as the installation that carries it. We’ve fixed enough botched DIY ridge vents in Long Beach to say this plainly: some jobs are worth paying for. If you want to know what the condition of yours is right now, call (562) 512-7366 and we’ll take a look. There’s no charge for the inspection and no obligation.
FAQs
Expect 12 to 18 years in coastal Long Beach, with homes closer to the ocean often landing on the lower end because of salt air and UV exposure. Inland neighborhoods like Los Altos or El Dorado Park typically see a few more years before the vent material becomes brittle. Call (562) 512-7366 for a quote specific to your roof’s age and orientation.
Small cracks can sometimes be sealed as a stopgap, but patching a ridge vent is almost always a losing bet because the material is already failing across the whole cap. We’ll tell you honestly if a repair is worth doing, but most Long Beach homes we inspect need a full swap. Call (562) 512-7366 to schedule a free estimate and we’ll assess it on the roof.
A straightforward single-story replacement on a typical Long Beach home takes half a day to a full day, including removal, installation, and cleanup. Multi-story homes or jobs where the ridge board needs repair will run longer. If you call (562) 512-7366, we’ll give you a realistic time frame when we see the roof.
We keep common CertainTeed Mountain Ridge and ShingleVent II profiles on the truck, and we can source other sizes from our local supplier within a day or two. We also stock compatible vents from GAF and Owens Corning if you need a different option. You don’t need to buy anything in advance. Call (562) 512-7366 and we’ll handle the materials as part of the estimate.
If your CertainTeed ridge vent is failing, don’t wait for the dry season to make it worse. Call Birchbark Roofing Long Beach at (562) 512-7366 for a free estimate. We’ll inspect the ridge line, give you a written price in dollars before any work starts, and leave your roof and property cleaner than we found them. A written price before anyone climbs a ladder, that’s where we start.
